The Catetinho (little Catete), the first building of Brasília, was a very simple construction, planned by Oscar Niemeyer. It was built with private funding in about ten days and became an important reference for everybody during those hard early days of the construction of the new capital. It is fair to mention here this “small, great building” as homage to those who declared their faith in this enterprise. These men and women showed their trust by setting the first posts, installing the first lamps, when so many others were inert, indifferent, or even opposed to the realization of such great a work.

The inauguration of Catetinho took place on November 10. Juscelino arrived at noon. Israel Pinheiro, the brother in law of Júlio Soares, the member of the House of Representatives, Renato Azeredo, the journalist José Morais and the Major Dilermando Silva waited for him. It was raining heavily. When he took a tour through the house, Juscelino was surprised how fast the Catetinho had been built and what good results had been accomplished. Catetinho offered the minimum necessary comfort: It had electric energy, a freezer, a radio, running cold water, and the most necessary furniture. The water was pumped up from an underground fountain and stored in tanks in a tree. A 75 kW diesel generator provided the electric energy. The generator had been installed on October 25, when also the first ice cube was produced in Brasília,

That evening of November 10, everybody slept at the Catetinho. One day later, they returned to Rio.
