Sarah Kubitscheck’ marriage to Juscelino Kubitscheck lasted 46 years. Sarah was born in Belo Horizonte to Jayme Gomes de Souza, a Member of the House of Representative, and Dona Luíza Negrão Lemos. Dona Sarah married Juscelino on December 31, 1930. From that day on, her life became deeply involved with the political career of her illustrious husband who held various public offices: Chief-of-staff in the governor’s cabinet in Minas Gerais, Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Mayor of Belo Horizonte, once again Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Governor of Minas Gerais, President of the Republic and, finally, Senator for Goiás state.
JK’s brilliant career imposed a life full of struggles and restrictions on Dona Sarah. She founded the Organização das Pioneiras Sociais (Organization of Social Pioneers), soon to become known for remarkable social work in Minas Gerais including the opening of schools and nurseries, and the distribution of clothes, food, wheelchairs and artificial limbs to the disabled.
The election of her husband to parliament brought Dona Sarah to Rio de Janeiro, where her charity (Organização das Pioneiras Sociais) expanded its work on the basis of increased funding. The charity opened schools in the interior of the country, founded specialized hospitals and research institutes such as the Centro de Pesquisa Luiza Gomes de Lemos (Research Center Luiza Gomes de Lemos) in Rio de Janeiro, dedicated to female cancer treatment and healthcare for the poor.
After JK’s respective elections to office, Dona Sarah founded the Júlia Kubitscheck Hospital in Belo Horizonte, whose surgical center was named after her brother Geraldo Gomes de Lemos, and founded the Sarah Kubitscheck Hospital in Brasília, where patients with motion disabilities receive special care. She opened many schools and day nurseries in the capital and in the interior including, for instance, the Educandário Luiza Gomes de Lemos in Cachoeira Paulista. Sarah introduced itinerant clinics to offer dental and medical care to remote populations. Among the mobile itinerant clinics were floating units, purchased from Germany and sent to Amazônia.
